Afternoon,
On Friday we played a set at Folkestone’s Quarterhouse, for BBC Kent Introducing’s 2nd Birthday. Definately our best gig of 2010 so far! The crowd were excellent and really enthusiastic; we had some sort of moshing and chanting going on. It was brilliant, and packed to the rafters. As relative newcomers to the Kent scene, we were all surprised at the reaction we got, and it is testament to the crowd’s open-mindedness that we went down so well. Roll on BBC Kent Introducing’s 2nd Birthday! Cheers to Jacob Rikard for playing us on his show and giving us a chance to play there.
Unfortunately we had to get back home, which was a major trek, so we missed out on seeing the bands on after us. Caught a glimpse of local band ‘Elephants’, and they seemed to really smash it too. Tom Williams and the boat were headlining, and although we couldn’t stay until his set, we did see him do an acoustic performance in an upstairs bar. No p.a no amps no nothing-but it was excellent. We’re playing with Tom at the Old Blue Last this Tuesday for his single release party, come on down and have a dance, it’s free after all. The facebook event is here.
There are interviews with all the bands and some of their songs (including us; Jumbo Jet and Sister On The Stairs) on BBC Kent Introducing’s Iplayer. Here is the link.
We met Legendary DJ Dave Cash and his lovely wife Sara that night too; a fascinating couple with some amazing stories to tell. Ben was enchanted, and so was I. He seemed to really like our set too, which was a bonus!
On the way back, we stopped off in a service station. In the shop they had ‘TEST SANDWICHES-NOT FOR SALE’. Naturally we were perplexed by this and asked if we could just have one, seeing as you can’t buy them. Turns out they are for testing the temperature of the fridge they’re stored in. Bizarre. Thermometer maybe? No? I bought Doritos. I also bought Doritos the day after in Camberwell, after a night at ‘Funky Monkey’ with Mahood.
Anyway, thanks to everyone who watched our set and danced. I for one can’t wait to play in Folkestone again!

Just got in from a fun show at 229 Great Portland St. I tried out a new dance move which i think went down quite well, but you can never be too sure with these things. The Screenbeats were great and reminded Ben that he’d played for their old school in his first ever band, Renton. Apparently my old band had played with them at the Dirty South a couple of years ago too. If you’re reading this, many thanks for letting us borrow your gear. Although it wasn’t packed in there by the time we went on, there were enough people there to make it good fun, and i think we all enjoyed ourselves. We were a bit sloppy, but at least we can consider it a rehersal of sorts for a big one tonight.
We’re playing at Folkestone Quarterhouse for BBC Kent Introducing’s 2nd birthday, and it should be great fun… I’m just readying my things to go and pick everyone up from Camberwell, as we’re going to be driving down there. Boys on tour. We need a Jag for this kind of thing. A jag, liqour and pretty girls. I have a Fiesta and a crate of Carling. Need to make a mix CD for the journey now…
3 things i’ve learnt in the last 24 hours:
1. Google maps LIES to you and is RUBBISH
2. My maps LIE to me and are RUBBISH
3. I need a satnav
Here’s a nice review of our E.P
I’ll be back to write about tonight when i get in later, so until then, ciao

Bonjour
Have had a pretty good week. On wednesday i went to see Fionn Regan at Komedia in Brighton. He played a brilliant set, with his new songs going down very well indeed. He didn’t speak much (last time the highlight for me was his strange, but humourous ramblings at the mic), perhaps he’s doing the whole Bob Dylan cool and moody thing. Still was a fantastic night, although the less said about me and my friends’ ‘afterparty’ the better.
Thursday was a blur, Friday, as ben mentioned in his blog earlier, we went to stringfellows. Not quite sure how/why they let me in. I was wearing Reebok workouts (good shoes, but really?) and a jumper with red wine all down the left sleeve. Saturday we played a set for Nick who runs bar mondo in Dartford. Twas a strange one, with the crowd only getting into it towards the end. Perhaps we should have played around with the order of the set a bit more. But, we all enjoyed ourselves and the entertainment afterwards was superb. Burlesque dancers, a guy with a ball, and jugglers, amongst others. There should be some videos creeping onto Youtube from this, so i’ll post the link when I can. Happy Birthday Nick!
Heard they’re going to get rid of BBC 6 music…if this happens, it’ll be a massive shame. Not just because they’ve played us a few times, but because it truly is the best radio station out there at the moment. Credible whilst still being entertaining. If it’s to do with funding, then can’t they just get rid of BBC 3? It’s utter drivel for the most part, or at least decommission ‘Coming of Age’, which is everything that’s wrong with the world in one programme.
In other news, come to this:
It’s going to be a corker!

Hey,
Ben here again. I’m pretty drunk. So, please excuse my drunken rambling at 5:30am. I just got back from a top night out DJing at Old Queen’s Head in Islington for the Who’s Jack girls Laura and Lu. I rocked the joint and left to continue partying at Stringfellows with Sterry and Laura. Don’t ask me why we ended up there. The truth is I fancied this girl who had her heart set on going. So, we went.
However, when I got there I got chatting to one of the dancers (as you do). Did you know that the girls who dance at Stringfellows pay for the privilege? I didn’t.
They pay £85 a night to dance there. Then, they get £20 per private dance. I was shocked at this revelation! I thought that they must get loads of money for the work they do.
It’s like unscrupulous music promoters charging bands to play. Outrageous!
Why should performers have to pay to perform? It’s wrong. Surely?
Maybe it’s a sign of the times that promoters see their artists as their income rather than their customers but I for one think that a student girl traveling form Luton to London every night just to dance naked in order to pay her tuition fees should not have to pay for the privilege. The girl in question lost £50 last night! WRONG!
Anyway, I’m going to sleep now. Sleep well yourself, Ben x

The Supernovas played a great set, as did the Is Tropical boys who were Djing afterwards. Ended up in the Macbeth with them at some kind of lock-in. Then woke up in Brockley with a headache and holes in my clothes.
Adios amigos

yo,
I know it seems a long way off when you have to scrape the ice off your car, and choose ’sensible’ footwear, but summer, technically, isn’t that far off. Couldn’t come soon enough in my opinion. Perhaps being born in May makes summer all the more appealing, and you can’t beat a good old fashioned English summer.
Perhaps i’m looking forward to the festival season too. Yes i suppose I am. We’re going to try and hit as many festivals as we can this year, and i cannot wait. So if you’re at a festival this summer, have a look at the bill and if we’re on, come and watch us!
We’ve been writing some new tunes recently and have a couple of new ones nearly ready to play live. One is called ‘Everything is Blue’ and, rather fittingly in this blog, is my tribute to the first signs of spring, and the way that everyone seems to get even more attractive in the sun. Perhaps some girls are solar-powered. The other is called ‘Famous Green Dress’. It’s about romance, or a lack of it, in the passenger seat of a Fiat Uno. Watch out for these, as they’re sounding great and we’re really looking forward to you hearing them.
The second E.P is nearly ready for mastering, so it’ll be out around May-time. It’s a little more upbeat that our first E.P, yet still just as diverse and we’re all really excited about it’s release. It’s a step up, and shows our development as a band, even in this short period.
There’s still some copies of our debut E.P left. Recently it’s been getting a fair bit of attention on BBC radio so there’s still plenty of life left in it, even though they’re nearly all gone! So get one now if you haven’t already.
For Kent dwellers, our next show is at Bar Mondo in Dartford, and should be a cracker. Our next London show is at 229 Great Portland Street, and we’d love to see you all there to pack the place out and have a super time.
Good bye for now

We played a chilled out acoustic gig last night for Adam Masterson’s new acoustic night, ‘The Gold Bug Club’ at The Boogaloo in Highgate. I (John) was feeling pretty tired so was glad of the sit-down! Met up with a producer (Paul Tippler) who we’re hoping to record with in the future. He’s recorded some great bands including this 80’s Matchbox bline Disaster and Idlewild.
Finally got most of my uni work done this week, so have felt like a free agent. Not much else to do around where I live, so I’ve taken to going to Bluewater shopping centre, primarily just to people watch. You get some amazing people in there. There’s the good-looking trendy people with their perfectly ripped jeans, exquisitely ‘messy’ hair and their luminous girlfriends, the stereotypical John Lewis customers with their trench coats and shiny shoes, the obligatory chavs in groups of twenty to thirty that you walk past with your head down…
There was a massive queue outside the surfer type shop ‘Hollister’, which for some reason, angered me. I think I made my disdain known in my facial expressions, and the fact that I was taking photos as i walked past. If I can work out how to get photos on here from my phone I’ll put them up. It’s not even good in there; it’s so dark you don’t know what colour the clothes are that you’re buying, and it’s done up to look like a surf-shack out of something like 90210. But it just looks a bit ropey to me. Maybe that’s why it’s so dark in there…
Did anyone see the video of Bob Dylan singing at the White House the other day? He’s still got it – still tells it how it is…
There’s still some physical copies (not many) left of our debut E.P available for £3, and if you haven’t got one, get one! Cheesy grin, sparkling tooth, wink.
Check out our myspace for our next few gigs. We have one at 229 Great Portland St. for Rocklands which should be great. It’s a big venue so come along and help make it a top night! The facebook invite is here.
The word ‘visionary’ is all too often used and reminds me of Garth Marenghi somewhat (“author, dream weaver, visionary, plus actor”) but William Blake truly is one. Aside from his incredibly complex yet entertaining poetry, he was involved in nearly every creative endeavour around. He used to print his own poems, engrave, paint, and incite the odd riot. Here’s an incredible painting by Blake that could easily have been painted yesterday. I like it:

Au revoir,

First of all, sorry we haven’t blogged for a while. We’ve been madly busy!
Steve Lamacq, Tom Robinson and Jacob Rickard have all been playing tunes from our 1st EP on their BBC Radio shows. We like to thanks them again. We have no money to hire a radio plugger. So, we rely on people who like our music to play it on it’s own merit. The fact that so many of their DJs are playing our tunes has re-installed our faith in BBC Radio.
We have played a couple of gig ‘for charity mate’ ; for ‘Get tested‘ and ‘Action for Haiti‘ in the last couple of weeks and we’ve just confirmed another gig for ‘Lavender Trust‘ in March. Here’s why we play so many charity gigs;
Well, With so many un-scrupulous promoters and venues in this city it’s hard to ever earn money from playing gigs. So, we figure that we’d rather play for free and earn money for a good cause rather than earn money for another promoter to pay his dealer.
We’re playing an acoustic gig this Thursday night at Boogaloo. Check out our latest gig listings on our website;

HOLA
This week has been a good week in the world of the Gaoler’s. We recently played at the Gala for the film ‘A bit of Tom Jones‘ on behalf of Get Tested (Hepatitis C charity). A bit surreal to say the least, but it turned out OK. Amy Studt was on just before and she was great, although the P.A wasn’t really as loud as it should have been for her. Twas good to see the Who’s Jack girls (Lu and Laura) again. I spotted the big bald guy from the post office adverts, Denise Welch and Doctor Sanchez (a.k.a Matt Berry, a.ka. best voice in the world) from Garth Marenghi’s Dark place. Before that we’d been to a ‘Urban Junkies’ party for Monkey Shoulder whiskey on the top floor of Centrepoint by Denmark St. It was pretty good in there and the whiskey was flowing, although we all felt a bit out of place what with us wearing our ‘we’re in a band and very poor’ outfits and everyone else wearing their finest suits. Thanks Ronnie for getting us in!
After the gig we went to Punk in Soho for a few drinks (thanks again Ronnie!). The music (it was skate rock/emo night apparently) made me remember my times down the Red Lion in Gravesend, being 15 and hiding cider in the bushes while watching some local band covering ‘what’s my age again?’. They were good times, and after one of these Medway flashbacks I found my self on the dancefloor, sadly doing the ‘rock’ sign with my hands.
Had another gig at the King’s Head Theatre Pub the other day too for Koukee Maloukes. It’s always fun there as it’s so relaxed and we get to play acoustic, which I always enjoy. It means we can try out new arrangements and songs in a chilled out environment. Peter Shreeves who runs the night is a top bloke and we’d gladly play there again. He was also telling me about his band (The Kubricks) having inadvertently written a possible world cup anthem, so watch this space. Also, Trigger from Only Fools and Horses was there! And Terry Gilliam, one of my favourite directors, artists/generally creative people. So this week has to be a solid 9/10 for celebrity spotting. Maybe i should write into heat magazine. Maybe not.
In other news, Steve Lamacq has been playing our E.P on his BBC shows more on BBC Radio 2 and 6, and yesterday I spoke to him over the phone. Just a little chat about who we are etc, and it’s nice to have someone like that liking our tunes. Something more may well come of it!
You can listen to the interview here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/b0072lb2/Friday/console/ (it’s about 2hrs 15mins in…)
There’s some new photos up from the Babyshambles tour. They’re on our facebook and our Website, and they look pretty sweet. Thanks to Gary for doing those
Also, don’t forget to sign up to the mailing list to recieve your free track. If you do it today (before the 1st) you’ll get 2 free tracks, so it’s basically like your birthday or something.
adios

Bonjour,
Our gig for Stroll On at The Old Queen’s head went well the other day. It’s not my favourite venue to play though; I don’t believe in having chesterfields in a venue, because if people are as lazy as I know I am, they will sit on them. And they did, mainly. But we got a good reception and there was a fair sized crowd in there, so all in all a good night. Thanks to the guys from Dartford and the French girls (Pia, Julie etc..) who came, sorry we couldn’t chat afterwards, as well all had early trains to catch. Sunday service is rubbb… If you read this blog often you’ll know i seem to have rather longwinded journeys home. Luckily this time everything went smoothly, and i met the Tom, the singer in S.C.U.M. on the train, who shared his crisps. A thoroughly nice person indeed.
Well, it was a nice surprise to hear us being played on BBC6 Music the other day. Steve Lamaqc played our song ‘Jumbo Jet’ of our recently released E.P as the last song of his set. It’s great that Lamaqc actually listens and plays demos that get sent to him, as i’m sure he’s one of very few nowadays. Cheers Steve!
You can listen to it here.
It was good to see Alfie’s old bandmate from Larrikin Love, Micko, in NME this week, speaking with Courtney Love about their collaboration over her new album. Micko is currently mixing one of our tracks, ‘Boomerang Boy’, which is set to feature on our next E.P, out in a couple of months. There’s also talk of us going to New York to record with him, although nothing is set in stone. Would be nice to get out of London for a bit though…
If you sign up to our mailing list, you’ll still be able to claim your FREE track, ‘9 Pieces of Silk’, but now if you sign up you’ll get another free track on February 1st. It’s called ‘In a While Crocodile’. Plus you’ll be kept up to date with all our goings on and gigs etc…
There’s a good review of our gig at the Flowerpot here.
And there’s been a couple more gigs added to the myspace which you can see here.
Take care,
Gaoler’s Daughter
